People rally in NYC in support of healthcare reform legislation.

As the Obama administration struggles to pass a healthcare reform bill, nearly 1,000 people have gathered in New York City to support the program.

Supporters on Saturday rallied near Times Square in Manhattan after the funeral for Sen. Edward Kennedy, who backed the plan. One person carried a sign that said, “Teddy-Care for all.”

President Barack Obama wants Congress to approve his reform proposals by the end of the year in order to provide healthcare to the 46 million Americans currently without any medical coverage.

Saturday’s rally was in response to town hall meetings around the country where many people have apparently come out against making any changes to the current health system.

US Rep. Carolyn Maloney told the crowd the bill will lower health care costs for almost everyone.

The New York Democrat also invoked Kennedy, saying the senator understood the need for change.

Commenting on the plan, Kennedy had said the proposed law would establish a ‘gateway’ for people without insurance or those who wish to change insurers to compare prices.

This is while opponents believe that the legislation will cost too much and diminish the quality of health care in the country.
