As the funeral and burial of Senator Edward Kennedy was held Saturday, thousands took to the streets of Manhattan to call for health care reform.
Speakers at the rally thanked Kennedy for his years of work pushing for health care for all Americans and said the fight must go on.
“The status quo is not an option. Costs are increasing exponentially. We really can’t afford to continue in the direction that we’re going,” said one demonstrator.
“Everybody needs to get our right to have health care from the babyhood on to old age,” said another.
Medical groups, unions and voter groups called on lawmakers to pass health care reform when they return to Washington next month.
Opponents argued the current health care proposals on the table were too costly.
