BINGHAMTON — Lea Webb has added another award to her already lengthy resume of community accomplishments and recognition.
At the NAACP’s Broome-Tioga Freedom FundDinner on Saturday night, Webb received the President’s Award, described by Christina Archie-Brown as the chapter’s most prestigious recognition.
“Lea has made significant contributions to the community,” said Archie-Brown, president of the local chapter. “The sky has no limit to her accomplishments.”
Among her achievements, Webb is probably best known for making history as the first black woman to be elected to Binghamton City Council in November 2007.
“I’m thankful,” said Webb. “The fact that I’m receiving this award on the 100th anniversary of the NAACP, and at a time when we have an African-American president, makes me especially humble.”
Other recipients of NAACP awards presented at a banquet Saturday night at the Holiday Inn-Arena in Binghamton were:
* H. Toni Norton and Stanley P. Gluck received the first Fred C. Hazel Lifetime Achievement Awards. Hazel founded the local chapter in the early 1920s.
* Valerie Zehl, of the Press & Sun-Bulletin, and Richard Alston, were given Outstanding Individual awards; Nathan Studgeon and Cheyo Rogers were recognized with Youth/Young Adult Awards; Giant Markets and Visions Federal Credit Union got Outstanding Business Awards; and the Broome County Urban League was given the first Billie D. Anderson Community Service Award. Anderson helped reorganize the local chapter in the early 1990s.
