“What do we want? Health care! When do we want it? Now,” yelled protestors outside
Congressman Scott Murphy’s office.
A week after first rallying outside his office, the mantra hasn’t changed. But after Congressman Scott Murphy’s vote on HR 3962, the urgency has.
“Despite hearing us, despite hearing from a majority of his constituents he decided to vote no. And we’re disappointed in him,” said Chris Scoville, from Citizen Action.
This angry rally, quickly became open dialogue when the Congressman himself showed up.
“We saw this as a prime opportunity you let pass by and that’s why we’re disappointed,” said Scoville.
Tonight’s protestors were a critical group, but it was also a chance for Murphy to answer in person.
“There were a lot of great things in this bill,” said Rep. Scott Murphy, (D)-Glens Falls.
But Murphy cited concerns he said other constituents have voiced.
“We need to do a lot more, fix the broken incentives that lead to those escalating prices,” said Murphy.
The constituents at tonight’s rally pushed Murphy on his answers, reminding him he promised to support health care reform, and the public option during his campaign.
“I hope when this bill comes back he makes the right vote, that’s what we’re trying to send him- the message, redeem yourself on the next vote,” said Al Ormsby, a supporter of plan.
Murphy said he will continue this discussion next Monday evening with a tele-town hall meeting. People from the 20th District can dial in and ask questions, and share concerns about healthcare and the economy. The will be held at 7:10 on Monday, November 16th.
In an e-mailed statement, the Congressman’s office said that, “Residents of the 20th District are encouraged to participate in the call. Those interested in participating MUST call Congressman Murphy’s office at 202-225-5614 by 5pm on Friday, November 13th, or email NY20.townhall@mail.house.gov with their name, address, and phone number by noon on Sunday, November 15th to be added to the list. Those who have signed up will receive a phone call Monday evening inviting them to join the call.”
