Eric Schneiderman spent Sunday at several African-American churches in Buffalo and community events in the area, and he will be continuing his campaign swing through Western New York on Monday by adding more endorsements to his bid to be the Democratic nominee for attorney general.
Already been endorsed by 1199 SEIU and Citizen Action, Schneiderman will on Monday pick up the support of the Western New York chapters of both organizations. An event is scheduled for Monday at 10 at Citizen Action’s Buffalo headquarters on Main Street to officially unveil the support.
“When it comes to the progressive values and the key issues that our members care about—health care, access to justice, jobs—no one has done more than Eric Schneiderman,” explained Ellen Kennedy of Citizen Action.
Adding fuel to his campaign’s effort to cast him as the candidate for minority voters, Schneiderman will also be endorsed by the Hispanic Alliance of Western New York. The Alliance’s president, Edwin Martinez, explained the endorsement in these terms as well, praising the state senator for “standing up for civil rights, economic justice and progressive social change.”
Schneiderman will also officially receive the endorsement of State Sen. Antoine Thompson, the sole African-American state senator from Western New York.
“Eric has proven that he will work hard for New Yorkers from every corner of this state,” Thompson said. “I have no doubt that he will continue to fight for what’s best for working families, clean up our environment and transform our criminal justice system.”
The Western New York chapter of the United Auto Workers will also back Schneiderman.
Pointing out that to date, Schneiderman has received more endorsements from elected officials, unions and other groups than any of the other Democrats in the five-person field, his campaign is hoping that this trip and the support he will receive Monday will help him establish a beachhead of primary support beyond his New York City base.
“In addition to his well-known strength downstate, Schneiderman is compiling easily the deepest, broadest coalition across the state, with his support in Western NY today being the latest example,” said a campaign source.
Several of the attorney general candidates took to the road this past weekend, including Assembly Member Richard Brodsky, who swept through the capital region and Hudson Valley over Saturday and Sunday.
The candidates will meet Tuesday morning for a debate sponsored by City Hall & The Capitol at 8:30 a.m. at the CUNY Graduate Center on 34th and Fifth Avenue, which is open to the general public.
