Kudos to The Buffalo News for its support of public financing of elections in New York State. For too long, legislative decisions have been made based on the desires of major donors to elected officials. Now is the time for publicly financed voter-owned elections. Legislators must be accountable to voters, not donors.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has voiced his support for public financing, and we urge him to take the lead in passing legislation this year. Everyone is calling for reform of government, but unless we change the way campaigns are paid for, the same power brokers will continue to call the shots. Enacting a public financing bill will signal to the voters that Albany is serious about reform, and it will be a giant step forward toward a government that truly works for the people.
