A coalition of community, labor, senior and consumer groups embarked on a statewide “Restore the American Promise” caravanWednesday that included a stop in Corning.

A number of protesters gathered outside the Market Street district office of U.S. Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning, according to a staffer at the office. The protesters were aware that Reed was in Washington, she said.

The retired state employees were there to protest cuts to Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security, according to Jim Carr, president of the New York State Public Employees Federation Retirees.

Caravan stops were to include Buffalo, Pittsford, Syracuse, Utica, Saratoga Springs, Kinderhook, Southampton, Massapequa Park, Staten Island and Somers. It is to continue Thursday and culminate with a final stop in Hyde Park at the FDR Presidential Library and Home.
