BUFFALO, N.Y. — A rally Thursday afternoon on the steps of Buffalo’s City Hall aimed to bring more attention to the Buffalo school district’s out-of-school suspension policy.

The rally was sponsored by community group Citizen Action of New York. It was held on the 19-month anniversary of the death of Jawaan Daniels, the 15-year-old Lafayette High School student who was fatally shot on Grant Street while serving an out-of-school suspension.

Demonstrators say Daniels’ death illustrates the harm of the district’s suspension policy.

“Jawaan Daniels was murdered senselessly for being suspended for a non-violent offense at a bus stop, just like that. We’re tired of our children being murdered in the streets,” said Bryon McIntyre, chairman, Alliance for Quality Education.

The demonstrators say they want services for disruptive students, many of which already exist, but are under-utilized.
