Citizen Action of New York is a grassroots membership organization taking on big issues that are at the center of transforming American society. We look for opportunities to accomplish big changes – not small, incremental reforms. We work to elect progressive candidates to office who are committed to these issues.
Citizen Action is also the New York State affiliate of USAction, which brings together citizen organizations from around the country to form a strong national progressive voice.
The major focus of this internship will be health care policy and particularly the establishment of a health insurance “exchange” under the Affordable Care Act (the new landmark federal health care law passed in 2010), but we are open to the student’s particular interests. Citizen Action is a key leader of Health Care for All New York, the major consumer-focused health care coalition in New York State. In addition to legislative memos, comments and other documents, students will assist with research and writing of reports in one or more of the following areas:
- Documenting the benefits of the ACA
- Reducing health care disparities
- Making the exchange an “active purchaser”
The students will be supervised by Bob Cohen, Esq., Bob has been at Citizen Action for over 11 years. Mr. Cohen’s previous positions have included counsel of the New York State Consumer Protection Board, a state agency.
How to apply: Send a resume and a cover letter indicating your interests and time commitment to Bob Cohen at bcohen@citizenactionny.org. (Questions? – email Bob or call him at 465-4600 x104)
This internship is based out of our statewide office which is located in Albany.
This is an unpaid internship. Internships can be applied to courses with a community service component. We have working relationships with many New York universities and colleges.
