Groups Gather to Strategize, Lobby Legislature
Albany, NY – On Monday, more than two dozen partner organizations in the Fair Elections for New York campaign, including community, faith, labor, good government, and other groups, joined together for an in-depth strategy meeting to plan for the legislative session. After the strategy session, the groups began their aggressive lobbying campaign by meeting with more than 20 legislators. A similar meeting of national organizations committed to the fight in New York is taking place in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday. This unique national effort to win Fair Elections in New York is being led up by NAACP, CWA, Sierra Club, and Greenpeace.

The people of New York have shown that they are tired of typical politics where their agenda always comes in second to the priorities of big money campaign contributors. Last year’s elections, paired with recent polling showing overwhelming support, proves that New Yorkers don’t want a quick fix or weak measures. They want real change to the status quo that empowers them through a Fair Elections public matching funds system.
By passing Fair Elections, New York could earn its credentials as the trend-setting state in the fight to reverse the Citizens United Supreme Court decision. It would be proof that people can overcome the influence of big money in politics.
We plan to wage an aggressive campaign, in the halls of the Capitol, and on the sidewalks of neighborhoods across New York to make sure that Fair Elections is passed this session.
