Good afternoon friends, allies, and retired Kanye West fans. Today you receive this Activist Check-In from a man who managed to twist his ankle while walking on flat pavement. Yup, I did that, and now I’m typing at warp speed on my laptop while contemplating how to wrap an ice pack around my right foot. While on a google search for tips on “how to not have a sore ankle,” I discovered that you can get paid millions of dollars for being able to jump really high. I am now training to become the backup center for the New York Knicks. NBA aspirations aside, I know why you’re here, so this is what you may have missed this week at Citizen Action.

We are a people-powered organization. Support us in the movement for justice!

StaffSuper Awesome Staff Meeting. What do you get when every chapter of Citizen Action, Metro Justice, Long Island Progressive Coalition, and the Alliance for Quality Education all come together? Political Voltron! We spent this week talking about the movement, looking for new ways to have an impact and renewing our dedication to racial, social, economic, and environmental justice. We’ll take this energy and dedication to the fight and see you at Justice Works 2k16.

We Can Win! The election season has been dominated by the fight between, the Sith lord, Hillary and Bernie, but in this week’s primaries, one of our champions for justice came out with a big victory. Zephyr Teachout won the Democratic primary for New York’s 19th Congressional District. Her victory is proof that you can reject the corporate elite and run a campaign backed by everyday New Yorkers. If you’re on twitter, take a moment to congratulate her on the victory. Click here to talk to Zephyr.

JUSTICE WORKS

Great news guys! Justice Works 2016 has a keynote speaker, and she’s AWESOME! Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor is the author of From #BlackLivesMatter to Black Liberation, published by Haymarket Books in January 2016. Dr. Cornel West said, “this brilliant book is the best analysis we have of the #BlackLivesMatter movement and the long struggle for freedom in America.” You can see Keeanga, and hear what she has to say on July 23. Click here to register for Justice Works.

Activist Check-In Podcast

The Activist Check-In Podcast is back and it’s better than ever! For this month’s episode, I interview Southern Tier Organizer Isaac Silberman-Gorn. We talk about everything from the chapter’s racial justice workshops to whether Batman would be a Libertarian or progressive Democrat. Listen to the episode and let us know what side of the political spectrum you think Batman falls on.
