We traveled across New York State to hold lawmakers accountable for their attempts to fix the budget by compromising the quality of life, comfort, and dignity of working families, disabled people, children, and our senior citizens – our greatest generation – in their final years.

For the past three decades, Washington politicians and their benefactors have broken their promises of jobs and economic relief to struggling working families. Instead, they have turned the “American Dream” of health, education and success into an American Nightmare of poverty, foreclosures and a loss of stability and dignity.

Now, they’re coming for our Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, all to pay for more tax cuts for the rich and sweetheart deals for big corporations. The upper one percent of Americans currently control over one third of the private wealth in America, and instead of paying their fair share, they now want to take the programs that we have spent our entire lives working to build. It’s our money and we’re not going to sit back and watch them take it!

Joining our staff, coalition partners, and concerned supporters were President Franklin Delanor Roosevelt and his wife Elanor Roosevelt, who oversaw the implementation of The New Deal, an economic overhaul in the 1930s that stimulated the recovery of the economy after the Great Depression and provided jobs and stability to thousands of working families. Arriving in a stately Studebaker, the elegant couple added an air of prestige and elegance to our caravan.

The Caravan commenced at Kleinhans Music Hall, a world-class venue that was made possible by Roosevelt’s New Deal. It was a fitting location to start off the procession and a testament to the ability of government to provide jobs and security instead of preying upon vulnerable working families.

Many citizens spoke about the need to restore the American Promise. Speakers included elderly people that rely upon essential services in order to pay for medication, disabled parents that rely upon the safety net in order to provide for their children, and concerned adults that have to care for their parents, among many others.

Meeting at 11 different locations across New York State, our Caravan garnered thousands of demonstrators, a myriad of press coverage (click here to read a list of articles) and supporters from different political parties (including Republicans!). America’s true majority came out to express their disbelief at the immense greed required to strip America’s social safety net.

At a press conference in the Legislative Office Building in Albany, AQE Executive Director Billy Easton spoke adamantly about the negative effects of Governor Cuomo’s budget cuts to education that are now being identified across the state as local school budgets pass. Last year, 10,000 school employees lost their jobs, including teachers, administrators, secretaries, aides, librarians, and other indiduals. Class sizes have increased, many essential in-school and after-school programs have been cut, and schools have been permanently closed. This year, 16,000 more school employees will also lose their jobs. It is important to note that the people losing their jobs are not just statistics — they are hard-working people with jobs and families that are being put out of work. Every school employee has a direct and tangible effect on a student’s life. Be it a teacher, aide, hall monitor, librarian, or secretary, these people are employed to enhance a student’s experience and to contribute to his or her well being.

All of this, while millionaires and billionaires are getting a huge tax break.

Developing our kids’ minds from a young age is of the utmost priority. Early childhood education is increasingly being cited as one of the most important factors in a child’s future success. 75% of a child’s brain development and 85% of intellect, personality, and social skills are developed by age five. And, several studies, most notably the High Scope Perry Preschool Project, estimate that every dollar invested in early childhood education returns over seven dollars by the time a child turns 19. Governor Cuomo’s cuts are directly affecting our kids’ opportunities for success!

And, contrary to popular belief, the millionaires’ tax doesn’t expire until the end of the year. There is still time for us to tell Governor Cuomo that it’s simply not right to put the interests of millionaires and billionaires before the needs of our kids.

You can help! Tweet your message with the hashtag #KidsNotMillionaires to help fight for our teachers, aides, and other school staff. Let Cuomo know that our children need quality education and that we cant afford to cut their future.

On Thursday, May 12, I hopped on a bus with Citizen Action of New York and other local activists. We made the trip from Albany to Lower Manhattan in order to join with On May 12, a massive political rally to protest a devastating state budget that puts millionaires before working New Yorkers.

We traveled to South Street Seaport to meet up with other progressive folks at the “Human Services” assembly point, where we focused on the need to fund early childhood education programs. Oh, and about 20,000 of our friends decided to show up, too.

As it was my first time attending such a large rally, I did not quite know what to expect. Many questions rushed through my head:

Would bankers come outside and yell at us? No.

Would people on the street stop what they were doing and watch? Yes. We actually had many people on the street cheering us on as we walked by.

Would different organizations get along? Absolutely! Different organizations banded together to share materials, food, and encouragement in order to maximize our impact and make sure that Mayor Bloomberg heard our message.

What really stood out to me was the passion of the protesters. This was not a solemn, quiet march. The demonstrators proudly strolled down Wall Street, calling out to the banks to contribute their fair share. Although, of course, we were protesting serious issues, we still found ways to have fun and liven up the day. One method was to take popular song lyrics and modify them to fit in with the protest. My personal favorite: “If you need an education I feel bad for you son, I’ve got 99 problems and the budget’s one!“

The addition of a marching band, in particular, was a big help in boosting morale among supporters. When we first arrived at the seaport, most of us were dressed expecting warm weather, as the forecast called for 70 degrees. A chilly wind blew in from across the seaport and threatened to put a damper on our spirits. The band, however, burst into a rousing rendition of “We Shall Overcome,” followed by a series of peppy marches. The band also favored Lady Gaga songs, playing “Bad Romance” and other hits.

There was a strong police presence as we marched through Lower Manhattan. Every block was flanked by scores of officers carefully watching demonstrators. For the most part (except for a few knuckleheads), the event transpired very smoothly and without incident.

One of the most interesting parts of the day was when I was approached by a reporter. We were standing around as we waited for our teach-in to begin when a reporter and cameraman came up to me and asked if I wanted to give a statement. As it was only my first week on the Citizen Action team, I deferred to my friend Chris who spoke about our role in the rally and the overall message that On May 12 was trying to convey. As the interview finished up, I learned that the reporter and cameraman represented Al-Jazeera’s American branch.

After the teach-in, all the different groups protesting converged in Battery Park for one final rally. This was a massive gathering of like minded individuals and served as the most emphatic part of the protest. Thousands of onlookers (police officers, press, and ordinary folks) watched in awe as we cheered, chanted, and urged New York State to do the right thing.

On Thursday, May 12th, thousands of concerned New Yorkers will converge at public assembly points throughout Lower Manhattan to protest a devastating state budget that puts millionaires before working New Yorkers</a

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is proposing disastrous budget cuts as the solution to the economic crisis caused by Wall Street. These cuts include stripping thousands of teachers of their jobs and shutting down childcare and senior centers. Meanwhile, Bloomberg is pushing for more tax cuts for the wealthy and giving billions of dollars to Wall Street as our schools are left to fall apart.

We’re joining with a coalition of hundreds of organizations and thousands of New Yorkers who are sick and tired of our government going behind our backs to give billion dollar bonuses to the very people who cause the financial mess in the first place. We’re attending this event to demand that none of our teachers are laid off, no schools are closed, and no essential services are cut – and that the millionaires, billionaires and big banks pay their fair share.

New York City should cut business ties with banks that won’t contribute their fair share on budget relief.

What would this do? Stop foreclosures, provide fee relief to families, businesses and students, and replace investments in climate catastrophe and war by investing in greener technology and local jobs.

By forcing banks to give back their subsidies and special deals, New York City will save hundreds of millions of dollars and instead utilize these funds to restore cuts to schools, firehouses, childcare, and senior citizens.

Who is participating? Alliance for Quality Education (AQE), Coalition for Educational Justice (CEJ), Center for Children Initiatives, Center for Working Families, Children’s Defense Fund – New York, and Community Voices Heard, among many others. Click here for a full list of collaborators.

How can you get involved? It’s easy to be heard On May 12th. Just hop on the subway or bus to your Assembly site of choice and bring some snacks and plenty of water to share. This map shows a list of the meeting locations:

Where are we meeting? Citizen Action of New York will be gathering at the South St. Seaport site, located at 20 Fulton St (number “8? on the map) to rally for Human Services. Wear your Citizen Action t-shirt and make it known that we wont sit back and allow Mayor Bloomberg to cut education funding!

Can’t make it? Don’t worry. We’ll be live-tweeting the event from @citizenactionny. Use the hashtag #OnMay12 to contribute to the conversation. There’s also a Virtual Rally being hosted on Friday, May 6th that will give New Yorkers a chance to tell Mayor Bloomberg how the cuts will affect them personally.

You can also find ways to get involved at On May 12th’s website, Facebook, or Twitter.

We hope to see you there!

This past weekend, Citizen Action leaders from all across the state gathered in Kerhonkson, NY for our Annual Leadership Conference. The time together is meant for discussion, planning, and –yes–simply enjoying each others company.

Shanna Goldman, our Organizing Director, and Chris Scoville, our Capital District Organizer, opened the conference with a dynamic discussion on far reach of economic concerns. Leaders then chose among 3 workshops that were divided into 2 days. Jess Wisneski, our Legislative Director, and Cynthia Ward, Northeast Action Executive Director, moderated the health care workshop. Cleo Oliver, Citizen Action Campaign Coordinator, and Carin Schiewe, Northeast Action Field Director, moderated the civic engagement workshop. Karen Scharff, our Executive Director, managed the education workshop.

Citizen Action staff loved the level of engagement–especially since we all put so many hours into organizing the conference.

The engagement, though, reached into the Internet this year. We live-streamed portions of the conference and actively used Twitter and Facebook. Leaders especially loved the Twitter projection. Be sure to click on the link to see what the buzz was all about.

We ended the conference on a riveting and uplifting note. William McNary, President of USAction – our national affliate-, brought everyone to their feet and some even to tears. Luckily, in yet another example of technological versatility, Charlie Albanetti, our Communications Director, captured this provocative engagement on video.
