Community Organizer

We are currently seeking 1 full-time Education Organizer in our Capital District office. If you like working with a diverse group of people and are committed to social change, come join our growing organization! Organizers main objective is to motivate and train citizens to engage in the political process and realize their own power in order to hold elected officials and decision makers accountable to our progressive worldview.

Responsibilities include:
• Organize actions, mobilizations, phone banks, media coverage and other activities as part of our issue and electoral campaigns, with a major focus on education and health care
• Recruit members, build our volunteer base and train local members and leaders
• Build and staff local coalitions and local Citizen Action leadership committees
Qualifications:
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• A creative approach to problem-solving, including strong analytic, strategic and planning skills
• Must like working with people
• Must be a team player
• Ability to travel, including having a reliable car
• Ability to work evenings and weekends

Database & IT Coordinator

Citizen Action of New York is seeking a Database and IT Coordinator to serve as the primary database administrator and technical resource for the agency.  The ideal candidate will have strong Microsoft Access database administration skills, including advanced query and report design, list management, and membership management for a homegrown Microsoft Access application.  In addition to strong database expertise, this position provides network administration, technical support, and vendor management for the central and regional offices.   Experience with non-profit and electoral work a plus.  The ideal candidate will have a self-directed person with a positive, “can-do” attitude with an eagerness to support a diverse staff with varying skill levels.   This person will be self-directed and able to prioritize competing requests in a fast paced environment. (Excellent for recent college graduates with strong Access and database management skills.)

Financial Manager

Citizen Action of New York is seeking a Financial Manager to handle accounts payable, receivables, purchasing, payroll, general ledger reconciliation, monthly financial reporting and analysis, journal entries, inter-company transactions, and government and private grant reporting.  Ideal candidate must have a “can-do” attitude and ability to work in a collaborative manner with all regional, program, and organizational staff.  Must have proven accounting, grant reporting, and computer skills.   Prior experience with QuickBooks and multi-company accounting is preferred.

Internships

Communications Internship

Citizen Action of New York is seeking a Communications Intern for the Summer 2008 term. Citizen Action is a grassroots, nonprofit organization with over 30,000 members and eight offices across New York State that fights for social, racial, and economic justice.

Primary responsibilities for the Communications Intern include:

  • Assisting with collection of information from 8 regional offices across the state;

  • Writing print and electronic membership/donor outreach documents; and,

  • Implementation of new outreach programs using technology to supplement traditional advocacy activities.

Qualified candidates will have strong communications and writing skills, a basic understanding of the political landscape in New York, and a willingness to learn new skills. This position is ideal for anyone with computer skills looking to be involved with public policy, politics, advocacy, organizing, or communications.
