NYRenews_100Percent_Twitter AdClimate change is a global crisis whose impact is being felt right here in New York. Hurricane Sandy displaced renters in New York City, leaving thousands stranded for weeks without food, medicine or running water. Hurricane Irene ravaged large swaths of upstate, knocking out power to tens of thousands of homes. Substantial reductions in greenhouse gas emissions will be required as soon as possible in order to limit global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees centigrade. By organizing throughout the state, we have made some progress on these issues, but moving New York into a new energy economy is not yet a reality.

In response, Citizen Action is working with a new coalition of environmentalists, community organizations and labor representatives called NY Renews. The coalition’s proposal (A.10342), the strongest state climate change legislation in the nation, would reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the state by 100% by 2050, and generate 50% of our electricity from renewable energy by 2030.

On Wednesday, June 1, people from around the state will gather at the State Capitol in Albany to call on the Legislature and Governor to take bold action on this proposal and on climate change. Join us for a day of public action on June 1st (11:30 AM) on the east side of the Capitol to demand 100% clean renewable energy, good jobs, frontline justice, and healthy communities!
