Dear Activist,

Our rent laws expire in 59 days and we’re fighting hard for rent stabilization laws and tenant protections that allow people to thrive. In Kingston, rents have increased by 50% since 2002, while wages have actually gone down. That’s the reality facing renters all across Upstate. With less than two months until the laws expire, it’s time to get to work.

AROUND THE STATE

Citizen Action joined the Kingston Tenants Union and local leaders to rally against rising rents and public funds going toward luxury development projects. Residents are calling for affordable housing and basic tenant protections.

Our leaders in Central New York have been pushing their local electeds to sponsor the Safe and Supportive Schools Act and rent stabilization legislation.

We joined the Capital District Latinos for an environmental justice forum to discuss the devastating effects of Hurricane Maria and the impacts of the climate crisis on the Latinx community.

THIS WEEK IN ACTIVIST HISTORY

On April 17th, 1965, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) organized the March Against the Vietnam War, which became one of the largest anti-war demonstrations with nearly 20,000 people participating.
