Dear Activist,

This week Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said that the Senate has the votes to pass all nine rent laws. This is super encouraging news—and a testament to the power of a unified, electrified, and statewide grassroots movement. We only have a couple of weeks left and are not willing to settle for a watered-down bill package that leaves tenants without critical protections. Keep turning up that pressure!

AROUND THE STATE

We co-sponsored a housing town hall in the Bronx with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and State Senators Alessandra Biaggi and Jamal Bailey. Unsurprisingly, AOC brought the fire:

“We have to make sure that housing is being legislated as a human right. What does that mean? What it means is that our access and our ability and our guarantee to having a home comes before someone else’s privilege to earn a profit.”

Our Central New York chapter held a fish fry to celebrate the local community and raise funds to continue the work of building grassroots power in Utica (and beyond).

Tenants and housing advocates were at the Capitol once again this Tuesday demanding the Legislature step up and pass all nine rent laws. Many engaged in civil disobedience, protesting the unjust evictions that continue to hurt our neighborhoods.

Chapter leaders also traveled to Albany for a day of action around the Safe and Supportive Schools Act. This bill would curb suspensions and excessive discipline for young learners in our public schools.
