Kingston, NY – In response to the city of Poughkeepsie Common Council’s approval  of Good Cause eviction legislation, Genevieve Rand, Citizen Action statewide housing organizer, released the following statement:

“We’re happy to see another victory for Good Cause eviction legislation at a time where so many people are struggling to make ends meet. Poughkeepsie has become the fourth locality in upstate New York to act on this bill to protect those who are extremely vulnerable to predatory evictions and unconscionable rent increases. Most New Yorkers agree that the right to a lease renewal is a basic right that everyone should have. Good Cause’s popularity across the state reflects the desire among tenants and property owners for fair and just housing that puts people before corporate profits. We thank our partners at Community Voices Heard and For the Many for their tireless work and grassroots organizing that made this victory possible.”
