CITIZEN ACTION OF NEW YORK REMAINS COMMITTED TO PROGRESSIVE POLITICAL CHANGE AFTER CHAOTIC PRIMARY SEASON DRAWS TO A CLOSE

August 24, 2022 (Albany, NY) – Citizen Action of New York is celebrating primary election victories by our endorsed candidates for New York State Senate: Lea Webb in the Southern Tier (District 52), and incumbents Jabari Brisport (District 25), Brian Kavanagh (District 27), Robert Jackson (District 31), Gustavo Rivera (District 33), and Brad Hoylman (District 47).

“We are especially excited about these victories given the headwinds our candidates faced in this primary. Mayor Adams, other conservative Democrats, and big monied special interests threw everything at them, including right-wing lies about bail reform and public safety,” said Stanley Fritz, Citizen Action of New York Movement Politics Director. “Redrawn districts and multiple primary election dates confused voters and depressed turnout. Yet, because these incumbents and candidates ran strong, grassroots campaigns grounded in progressive values that are shared by a majority of New Yorkers, they prevailed. This is a clear statement from voters that they want a government for the people, focused on building a New York that works for everyone, and that they reject the politics of austerity and fear.

We’re proud of our champions’ campaigns and of the thousands of conversations Citizen Action members and staff had with voters that helped propel them to victory. Real progressive power comes from the people, and it’s the connection with voters that will enable them to be true champions for New Yorkers in the state legislature.

We look forward to supporting them in the legislature next year as we hold every elected official accountable for prioritizing the well-being of all New Yorkers by addressing the climate and housing crises, ending mass incarceration, and ensuring that all children have access to quality child care and education.”
