Albany, NY – In response to reports that Gov. Cuomo will include a publicly financed elections system in his budget proposal, Ivette Alfonso, President of Citizen Action of New York, said:
Governor Cuomo has made it clear that restoring the public’s trust in government is one of his top priorities and that there’s no better way to do that than with public funding of elections. As we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday today, it is timely to focus on a campaign finance system that would restore the voice of voters in our democracy, regardless of wealth or race.

With the long term leadership of Speaker Silver, and the strong support and leadership from the Governor, we are looking forward to finally enacting this critical legislation in 2014. It’s time for the Senate Majority to accept that the voters want to change our corrupt pay-to-play campaign finance system and enact a small donor matching system.
