Community Group Says AG Candidate Should Release 5 Years Of Tax Returns So New Yorkers Can See How Much He Has Profited Off Oil And Gas Industry
Albany, NY – Citizen Action of New York today called on Republican attorney general candidate John Cahill to release five years worth of tax returns for public inspection – a standard practice by which virtually all candidates for public office abide.
“When it comes to transparency, John Cahill has been an utter failure,” said Karen Scharff, Executive Director of Citizen Action of New York. “Not only has he refused to release a list of the oil and gas industry clients that he lobbies for in Albany, he has also avoided letting the public see what’s in his tax returns – a standard practice in almost every campaign. New Yorkers deserve to know how much money Cahill has made off the same special interests that he would need to regulate as attorney general, and how much he paid in taxes. Until he comes clean, we can only assume he’s trying to hide something.”
As the Journal News pointed out, Governor George Pataki – Cahill’s former boss in state government and current business partner – “set the standard for disclosure of tax returns when he released five years in 1994.”
Eric Schneiderman has made his tax returns available for public inspection every year that he has served as Attorney General as well as during his campaign for the same office.
The State Democratic Committee recently called on Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino to release his tax returns. Astorino responded by providing one year’s returns.
