This week, the House Administration Committee will be holding a public hearing on the Fair Elections Now Act (H.R. 1826) – the federal version of Clean Elections.
The bill would free federal level candidates from the constant dialing for dollars that currently makes up far too much of a candidates tasks during a political campaign. Instead, candidates would be able to spend their time learning about the needs of their constituents and discussion the issues that are important to all of us.
It would also allow elected officials to no longer be held by the grip of corporate influence that plagues the halls of Congress. If elected officials don’t need campaign contributions from lobbyists and big business, the temptation to support big business over everyday Americans will no longer exist.
As the House Administration Committee is considering this bill, we are working to get two New York City members of Congress – Representatives Yvette Clarke and Joe Crowley – to sign on as co-sponsors of this legislation. These two members have great influence over other members of the House Administration Committee, and would be able to help move it along. But, they’ve indicated that they need to see more public support for the legislation before they’ll sign on.
So, here’s where you come in…
If you live in New York City, please click here to send Reps. Clarke and Crowley a fax asking them to sign onto the Fair Elections Now Act.
Your voice will be critical to getting the support in Congress necessary to make this bill become law.
