President Obama last night issued a powerful call for reforms that will guarantee all Americans have good, affordable coverage, directly taking on the insurance industry that wants to protect its profits and his political opponents who are engaging in partisan fear-mongering.
He reaffirmed his support for the most essential reforms: assuring that people get good health coverage at work; strict insurance company regulation; and a new public health insurance option.

The President reminded us that the same forces who two and three generations ago opposed programs like Social Security and Medicare are once again working to deny the basic needs of our people.
But the right-wing opponents of reform are once again on the run. Polls taken right after the speech are showing that 2 out of 3 Americans support the President’s plan.
But, the reaction to last night’s speech also demonstrates that the irrational opponents of a simple choice of a public option are not letting up. With the Senate Finance Committee set to begin writing legislation next week, we need to make sure our Senators are aggressively backing the public option during negotiations.
