Local Health Care Supporters Thank Schumer for Support for Public Option in Senate Finance Health Care Vote His Support Sets Up for Debate on Senate Floor That Will Lead to Public Option in Final Bill Albany, NY — Health care supporters in Albany will be gathering outside the office of Senator Charles Schumer on Friday, October 2nd to thank the Senator for offering an amendment to the health care legislation being worked out by the Senate Finance Committee this week that would ensure that private health insurance companies are held accountable by inclusion of a strong public health insurance option in the bill. The group will be presenting Senator Schumer’s office with a large thank you card, signed by local advocates, as well as flowers. The Schumer public option proposal was defeated, but attracted 10 of the 13 Democrats on the Finance Committee, making passage of the proposal on the floor a strong possibility. “We look forward to a strong debate on the Senate floor and to eventual passage of legislation in the House that will create a public option to give New Yorkers an alternative to the abuses of the private insurance industry,” said Chris Scoville, Capital District Organizer for Citizen Action. The Albany event is one of 4 events held in New York State today to thank Senator Schumer. Citizen Action of New York is also getting thousands of New Yorkers to sign a letter to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urging her to insist that a public option is included in the final health care legislation sent to the President. (The House proposal contains a public option.) The letter can be viewed here.
