For Immediate Release: October 13, 2009
Albany, NY — Health Care for America Now (HCAN) in New York State released the following statement in reaction to passage of a proposal this afternoon in the Senate Finance Committee on health care reform:
Statement by Mary Clark, on behalf of HCAN in New York State:
“The end of the Senate Finance Committee process marks a move toward the next phase, where we will working hard to vastly improve this legislation. The Senate Finance Committee bill falls short on making insurance affordable to America’s families, gives employers a free ride, and does not create meaningful competition in the insurance market with a strong national public health insurance option. The foundation of health care reform must be built upon a public health insurance option and measures to make health care more affordable.”
“The leading health insurance industry trade group showed its true colors yesterday by releasing a bogus report threatening to raise rates if health reform passes. The weak Senate Finance Committee bill will allow them to carry out that threat. That is more the reason why we need a bill with a public health insurance option, and regulations that reign in the insurance industry.”
HCAN is the nation’s largest health care campaign. HCAN fights for a guarantee of quality, affordable health care for all with the choice of a strong national public health insurance option in 2009. Mary Clark, the regional director of Citizen Action of New York in Binghamton, coordinates the HCAN campaign in New York State.
