by Chris Scoville, Capital District Organizer
Last night over 60 concerned citizens, community activists and union members turned out in the rain to ask Congressman Murphy to do what is best for the district, the state and the country and vote for the House health care bill. Simultaneously representatives from Citizen Action and Health Care for America Now were meeting with the Congressman in Washington making clear to him how much his district stands to gain from passage of the House bill.
With the House set to vote on its health care bill this weekend we continue to stand strong and our message remains clear. Those in support of real reform are in the majority and the 20th congressional district, New York State and the entire country will benefit from passage of the bill.
A yes vote from Congressman Murphy in Washington will mean the following benefits brought home to his district:
* 459,000 people guaranteed good coverage at work
* Health insurance made more affordable for 151,000 families
* The prescription drug donut hole closed for 8,000 seniors
* 15,500 small businesses given tax credits to help purchase coverage
* Coverage for 35,000 people currently uninsured
* Protecting 1,200 families from medical expense caused bankruptcy
Congressman Murphy’s district has so much to gain from passage of this bill and what would be lost is the fear of what business as usual would mean: Fear of not being able to afford coverage, fear of being denied care due to preexisting conditions and fear of losing care because of getting sick.
We must maintain our pressure on Congressman Murphy until he votes for the bill. We need all supporters of reform to make calls to his office telling him, “We voted for you, now we want you to vote for us! This is what your constituents want. Don’t let the best opportunity in decades to pass quality affordable health care pass by. Make history, vote for the House health care bill, HR 3962.”
