Citizen Action of New York Launches StandUpScott.org Urging Rep. Scott Murphy to Vote for Health Care Reform

Conference Bill is Murphy’s Last Chance to Honor His Commitment to Support Health Care Reform

Albany, NY – Today, Citizen Action of New York launched a new website, StandUpScott.org, to urge Rep. Scott Murphy to vote for health care reform. The site will serve as an outlet for New Yorkers who supported Rep. Murphy during his campaign for the 20th Congressional District seat to express their support for health care reform and ask him to do the same. Rep. Murphy won the seat in a special election in March 2009 after he pledged to stand up for his constituents, New Yorkers and Americas by fighting for health care reform.

Karen Scharff , Executive Director of Citizen Action of New York, said, “We know that the time is now for real health care reform to pass and Congressman Murphy has a chance to be part of this historic moment. The website is designed to show Congressman Murphy just how much health care reform means to those who worked so hard for him during his campaign.” Scharff added, “We plan to meet with Congressman Murphy to express, in person, once again, why to be a true champion of health care reform he must vote for this bill.”

On November 7, 2009, the House of Representatives passed their health care reform bill. Congressman Murphy was one of three New York Democrats who voted against the bill. The House and Senate are now in conference to produce a final health care bill to be voted on by both houses and sent to the President for his signature.

Al Ormsby, a constituent who volunteered on Murphy’s campaign said, “I whole heartedly support this website because Congressman Murphy needs to hear from those who stood with him during his campaign. We stood up for Scott in the special election; he did not stand up for us when he voted against the House bill. Now is the last chance for him to stand up for us, his constituents, and all Americans and vote for the final reform bill.

The website includes a petition that will collect signatures of those who supported Congressman Murphy in his election, either through donations, phone calls to potential voters, door to door canvassing, or their votes on Election Day. StandUpScott.org also features a video from a Health Care for America Now rally in February 2009, at which then-candidate Scott Murphy pledged to support health care reform.

“We stood with Scott on that brutally cold day in February because he was there to support health care reform as a key pillar of his campaign. It is because of this pledge that we were shocked when he voted against the House health care reform bill and why we are calling on Scott to make good on his promise and vote yes on the final bill, his last chance to be part of history”, said Faith Fish, a Citizen Action member who volunteered on Scott Murphy’s campaign.

Citizen Action leaders plan on meeting with Congressman Murphy to discuss his vote on the final bill.
