“They get the gold, we get the shaft” is what hundreds of workers chanted at Albany’s Capitol today. They were joined by the Growing Together NY coalition and rallied to urge elected officials to protect their families’ jobs, their schools, their seniors, their communities and NOT millionaires. A wonderful array of groups joined in solidarity as well as some inspiring speakers. They included Pat Baker, Vice President of the Public Employees Federation, Mark Dunlea, Director of Hunger Action of NY, and a few state representatives. The crowd was energized and ready to go!
A man named “Goldman Sacks” interrupted the speakers with a sign that stated “GREED NOT NEED” and “Save the rich.” The intent was to poke fun at the ideology of saving the millionaires, instead of saving ordinary New Yorkers. There were limos driving around the capitol yelling to the public “Save my gold, I’m rich.”
Whether the intent was to poke fun or showcase the absurd ideals of the wealthy, it didn’t faze the crowd. They were alive and ready to advocate for themselves and their families. They had something to say and were ready to tell Governor Cuomo and elected officials that rather than cutting jobs in the public sector, deny support to the hungry and poor or their children’s education, he should focus on the special interests and extend the Income Tax Surcharge on the Wealthiest New Yorkers!
“They get the gold, we get the shaft.”
