Local Residents to Ask Congresswoman Buerkle Why She Wants to End Medicare and Give Tax Cuts to the Rich at Palmyra Town Hall
Syracuse, NY – Citizen Action of New York and 1199SEIU will mark the tenth anniversary of the day George W. Bush signed into law a $1.35 trillion tax cut (June 7, 2011) by asking tough questions of Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle (R-25th) on Medicare and taxes at a town hall meeting on Wednesday, June 8th in Palmyra. Buerkle is on record as supporting the Bush era 2001 tax cuts that primarily benefited the wealthiest Americans while leaving our country with massive debt, and ending Medicare as we know it.
Tuesday’s event is one of dozens taking place around the country as supporters of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security protest efforts to cut essential services while giving trillions of dollars in additional tax cuts, exemptions and loopholes to the super-rich and to corporations.
“Enough is enough,” said Rosemary Rivera, Organizing Director for Citizen Action of New York. “Our economy is in tatters and the middle class is disappearing. Yet some in Congress like Anne Marie Buerkle are at it again. They want to give even larger tax cuts to corporations and the super-rich while slashing essential services, and ending the basic right of seniors to get Medicare without going into massive debt.”
Citizen Action of New York and 1199SEIU support the Taxation in Fairness Act, sponsored by Rep. Jan Schakowsky, an Illinois Democrat. The bill would create new tax brackets for millionaires and billionaires and help working Americans cope with the ongoing economic crisis.
