The Alliance for Quality Education released a video today addressing the cuts being made to New York State Regents exams.

The Regents diploma is New York State’s highest learning standard and an important factor in college acceptance. Having this diploma increases a student’s chance of being accepted to a competitive college, thus increasing chances for gainful employment. If New York cuts these diplomas, students will be less attractive to colleges, diminishing their chances for employment and success in their careers.

New York is creating another obstacle for underprivileged youth by cutting these exams. Already, German, Hebrew, and Latin language exams have been eliminated. In August, Chemistry and Trigonometry exams will no longer be offered, and January exams are being eliminated completely. While recently raised private funds are restoring the 2012 January exams, this is only a temporary solution to a permanent problem.
