Today, labor union representatives gathered in Dunkirk, New York, to show their support for the 45,000 workers that are currently on strike to protest the proposed compensation cuts from Verizon. Workers have been striking since August 7th and will continue to do so until an agreement is made.
Approximately 100 workers, supporting local Communication Workers of America and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers rallied in front of Dunkirk City Hall to show solidarity with the striking workers. Other groups in attendance were Citizen Action of New York, New York State United Teachers, the Jamestown Central Labor Council, Civil Service Employees Association and Steel Workers 2693.
One notable speaker at the rally was Natalie Luczkowiak, the leader of our Buffalo chapter.
Verizon is trying to freeze current workers’ pensions (eliminating them entirely for future workers), allow the outsourcing of more jobs, replace negotiated wage increases with merit pay, severely cut sick and vacation days, and eviscerate health care plans for current and retired employees.
This is the fourth rally in Chautaqua County. There have been rallies all over New York State since the strike began. Find a picket line near you and show your support!
