Citizen Action Reacts to Assem. Candidate John McDonald’s Comments

Albany, NY – Yesterday, Cohoes Mayor and candidate to represent the 108th Assembly District John McDonald said his opponent “only worries about the lower class.” In response, Karen Scharff, Executive Director of Citizen Action of New York, said:

I’m deeply offended by Mayor McDonald’s “lower class” comments yesterday. At Citizen Action and the Working Families Party, we fight for middle class working families every day, and we know that Carolyn McLaughlin wants to improve everyone’s chances, no matter whether they are low income or middle income, and whether they live in Albany or Cohoes or elsewhere in the district. Mayor McDonald’s comments yesterday are a desperate, last minute attempt to use code words to make race an issue in this campaign, and they reveal that he is not interested in representing everyone. It is reminiscent of the ill-informed, divisive Republican rhetoric that has created a climate of hate in our country.
