Albany, NY – In response to the release of a new poll by Public Campaign Action Fund showing that 79% of New Yorkers want bold campaign finance reform, including a public matching funds system, Karen Scharff, Executive Director of Citizen Action of New York, said:
New Yorkers are tired of their government being bought and paid for by CEO campaign contributors and lobbyists. After the most expensive election season in history, voters made clear choices about who they wanted in office. Against the odds, voters chose to elect candidates who stood as champions for publicly financed Fair Elections.
Voters are acutely aware of the cost of allowing our government to go another year doing business as usual. This poll shows that New Yorkers think $2 per year is a very small cost for a functional democracy with real representation.
Our leaders in Albany should take close note of the results of this poll and heed the call of voters across the state who are demanding real reform that will finally limit the influence of big money in our elections.
