Governor’s Support Means 2013 is Year for Real Reform

Albany, NY – In response to the newly released Siena poll showing that 59% of New Yorkers support a small donor matching funds system for campaigns like the one that Governor Cuomo advocated in his State of the State address, Karen Scharff, Executive Director of Citizen Action of New York, said:

This poll once again affirms that New Yorkers are sick and tired of status quo politics where the people’s agenda gets pushed aside. New Yorkers know full well that half-hearted changes won’t fix the problem. It’s clear that the only way to limit the influence of CEO campaign cash over elections is through a system of public matching funds that amplifies the impact of small donors. Reform isn’t reform without publicly financed Fair Elections.

Governor Cuomo has proven that his leadership can overcome political roadblocks. As the broad public support continues to grow on this issue, the momentum exists for New York to be successful in creating a system of public financing of elections during this legislative session.

Last month’s Public Campaign Action Fund poll showed similarly that an overwhelming number of New York voters support publicly financed Fair Elections.
