Community Organization Cites Wright’s Consistent Advocacy and Leadership in Fighting for Full Funding of Public Schools and Permanently Affordable Housing

New York, NY – Today, Citizen Action of New York announced its endorsement of Tremaine Wright for election to represent the 56th Assembly District in Bedford Stuyvesant Brooklyn. A lifelong resident of Bed-Stuy, Wright has been a pillar in her community and has dedicated much of her time to volunteer work and activism.

“Tremaine Wright represents the kind of leadership that New York needs,” said Ruthly Cadestin, a member of the Board of Citizen Action of New York. “She’s a lifelong New Yorker who has dedicated her life to uplifting the community, deciding to take that passion to the next level by running for office. If she’s elected, the 56th Assembly District will be getting a representative who is truly from and for the community.”

“The work of Citizen Action is reflective of community activists participating in the management and direction of our society. The issues may change, but it’s the voice of the community-making decisions regarding how we operate that is so important,” said Tremaine Wright. “Over the last 13 years, I have done similar work through participation on my local community board. I have had to address local health, safety, economic, education and land use/housing issues. Much of the demand from our community aligns with the goals of Citizen Action.”

Wright has worked as an attorney and for 9 years operated Common Grounds, a neighborhood coffee house that provided a place for various segments of the community to intersect and connect. If elected, she plans to fight for full funding of public schools, including the CFE settlement money due to school districts, promote parent involvement, and push for permanently affordable housing.

Citizen Action of New York is a grassroots, community organization with over 30,000 members across New York State. The organization works on issues important to our communities, including limiting the influence of money in politics, guaranteeing livable wages and economy-boosting jobs, quality public education for all children, reforms to the criminal justice system, and more. Citizen Action endorses candidates for public office who support the same vision for a New York that works for everyone, not just the wealthy.
