3-Year-Old Moreland Recommendations Are Still the Roadmap for Reform

Albany, NY – In response to news that more public officials in New York State have been arrested on federal corruption charges, Karen Scharff, Executive Director of Citizen Action of New York, said:

“Take a look at almost every corruption case in recent history and you’ll find campaign donations play a key role in the story. Our campaign finance system in New York begs for corruption. That’s why the bi-partisan Moreland Commission to Investigate Public Corruption recommended comprehensive campaign finance and ethics reform as an essential component of ending the parade of arrests.

“Cleaning up contracting and bidding processes isn’t enough. Stiffer penalties won’t stop the bribes. Those in power have had a roadmap for real reform for three years.

“With election day just a couple weeks away, voters have the opportunity to change New York’s “show me the money” culture by electing candidates committed to comprehensive reform.”

Last week, a broad group of more than 40 community, faith, and labor organizations wrote to our state’s leaders calling for implementation of the Moreland Commission’s recommendations. Click here to read the letter.
