Albany, NY – In response to Governor Cuomo’s first day of State of the State regional addresses, Karen Scharff, Executive Director of Citizen Action of New York, said:
“A real middle class recovery plan would focus on shifting wealth back to working families – away from the billionaire CEOs and Wall Street bankers who now control more wealth than any time in modern history.
“For New York, the first step should be expanding the state’s millionaires’ tax. It would jump start the economy and help fund programs and services for ordinary New Yorkers who have been struggling under years of trickle-down schemes.
“Creating jobs and rebuilding our infrastructure, providing quality education for all students, and reforming the tax system could all help rebuild the middle class. But the devil is in the details. If the details include tax breaks for corporations and the rich, privatizing education and reducing public services, then the plan will keep making the rich richer at our expense.”
