People Power Once Again Defeats Republican Health Care Plan
With the 52nd Anniversary of Medicaid and Medicare Approaching, it’s Time to Pass Medicare for All
Albany, NY – In response to Senate Republicans’ failure to dismantle our health care system, Karen Scharff, Executive Director of Citizen Action of New York, said:
“People power defeated big money as grassroots pressure stopped Republicans from repealing the Affordable Care Act. Like previous bills, the Republican party’s “Skinny Repeal” would have taken insurance from millions of working people, and increased health insurance premiums.
“Last night’s defeat of the “Skinny Repeal” was a victory for grassroots organizing, but our fight is not over. As long as there is a Republican majority, our health care is in danger. Paul Ryan and House Republicans are already attempting to go after health care through the budget, proposing a cut of $1.5 trillion over ten years to Medicaid. That kind of cut would be devastating to people with disabilities, children, seniors, and families across the country. It’s time for House Republicans to listen to their constituents, and stop trying to destroy the health care system in order to give tax cuts to the wealthy.
“Our members will use the August recess to send a strong message to GOP Members of Congress: Stop the cuts. As we reach the 52nd Anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, it’s long past time to pass Medicare for All.”
