Statement: Citizen Action of New York Supports Efforts to Curb Racist Lending Practices

Albany, NY — In response to Ulster County’s decision to withdraw funds from TD Bank, Deputy Director of Citizen Action of New York Jessica Wisneski issued the following statement:

“Public money should not be put in the hands of banks that discriminate against people of color. We applaud Ulster County Executive Michael Hein for his immediate action to remove county funds from TD Bank.

“It’s clear that we need stronger regulations to curb racist lending practices. Despite laws barring discrimination, banks continue to find ways around the rules. We thank Assemblymember Kevin Cahill for fighting for important legislation that would strengthen the law.

“Now Senator George Amedore should condemn this racist practice and introduce similar legislation in the Senate.”
