In response to the planned House vote on the “Balanced Budget Amendment,” the undersigned groups have issued the following joint statement:
“Last year the Republicans forced through a massive tax bill that cut taxes for wealthiest CEOs and hedge funders. After draining trillions from the federal coffers, they now want to “balance” the budget with a constitutional amendment that puts our Medicare and Social Security benefits at risk.
“This proposal is yet another trick by Congressional Republicans to cut critical services to pay for their tax giveaways to the rich. They would even take food out of the mouths of children, seniors, and people with disabilities to pay for their tax cuts.
“If Republicans cared about the people they were elected to serve, they would repeal these huge tax cuts and invest in Medicare, Medicaid, retirement security, nutritional assistance, and other vital safety net programs.
“We urge all New York State House Members to vote against this deceptive and dangerous ‘Balanced Budget Amendment.'”
