Statement: After Eight Years, Cuomo Finally Acts on Voting Rights

Albany, NY – In response to Governor Cuomo’s executive order restoring voting rights for parolees, Karen Scharff, Executive Director of Citizen Action of New York, said:

“Barring people on parole from voting has long been a blight on our state. This outdated law has kept thousands of low-income people and people of color from exercising their democratic right. We are glad that after eight years Governor Cuomo has finally come around on this issue and now supports New York joining the 16 other states that restore voting rights to post-incarcerated people. It shouldn’t take a challenge from the left for the Governor to do what is right for our communities.”
