New York Leaders Must Follow Suit, Include Small Donor Matching in Budget Proposal
Albany, NY—In response to the U.S. House’s passage of the landmark HR1 legislation, Jessica Wisneski, Co-Executive Director of Citizen Action of New York, has issued the following statement:
“The 2018 elections were driven by people power: people on doors, on phones, in the voting booth. Small donors were the driving force behind the “Blue Wave.” We applaud the Democratic House of Representatives for responding accordingly by making their first major piece of legislation one that puts people, not big money, at the center of American politics.”
“HR1, the For the People Act, sets a new standard for what campaign finance reform looks like in 2019. Speaker Pelosi and the New York Congressional delegation have shown real leadership by prioritizing democracy reforms. We expect our leaders in the New York State to follow suit by including small donor public financing in their budget proposal.”
“The people of New York deserve strong rent laws, health care for all, fully funded public schools and an aggressive answer to the climate crisis. To win our vision for a New York that works for the many, we must dramatically reduce the influence of money in politics and replace it with a system that amplifies the voices of everyday New Yorkers.”
