Albany, NY—In response to today’s joint statement by the State Senate Majority Leader and Assembly Speaker on New York’s rent laws, Rosemary Rivera, Co-Executive Director of Citizen Action of New York, has issued the following statement:
“We’re encouraged that the State Senate and Assembly leadership reaffirmed their commitment today to passing strong protections for millions of tenants who right now face predatory rents hikes and unjust evictions.
“But the details matter. The Senate and Assembly have to pass a package of bills that protect all tenants from unjust evictions in every part of the state, no matter the size of the rental property. The “Good Cause” eviction protection bill will stop arbitrary rent hikes by capping rent increases to 150 percent of the Consumer Price Index and protect tenants from threats and harassment that too often force people out of their homes.
“A package without these details would leave too many tenants in places like Buffalo, Binghamton and Albany out in the cold.”
