Rochester, NY–Local community organizations call on Rochester Gas & Electric to halt all utility shut-offs indefinitely and cancel the planned May rate hike.

Iberdrola, the Spanish corporation that owns Rochester Gas & Electric, posted a record profit of $3.8 billion in 2019, an increase of 13% over the previous year:

“As families in our community face the sudden loss of jobs and income due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we urge Rochester Gas & Electric to commit to a full moratorium on utility shut-offs for the duration of this health emergency. The proposed 30-day suspension is an inadequate response to this crisis.

“We also call on Rochester Gas & Electric to cancel their planned rate hike, which further jeopardizes the economic security of families in our region. No company should be putting private profits before the health and wellbeing of our community members.”
