Citizen Action announces first slate of ranked choice City Council candidate endorsements
New York, NY— Citizen Action of New York announced its first slate of ranked choice endorsements for New York City Council in District 14 in the Bronx and District 39 in Brooklyn. Citizen Action has chosen Pierina Sanchez as its first choice for the seat in District 14, and Adolfo Abreu as its second. In Brooklyn, Citizen Action is backing Shahana Hanif as its first choice to represent District 39, and Brandon West as its second.
As the daughter of working class immigrants from the Dominican Republic, Pierina learned the value of hard work at an early age. She is no stranger to public service and has been a strong voice for immigrant families, racial justice, affordable housing, good jobs and meaningful investments in our children, families and seniors.
“Pierina Sanchez is a progressive fighter, and we are proud to endorse her as our number one choice for City Council District 14,” said Jason Salmon, NYC Regional Director of Citizen Action of New York. “Pierina’s an exceptional candidate and her community organizing, government experience, and intimate relationship with her community will allow her to hit the ground running the first day she walks into City Hall. New York City’s progressive future will be brighter with Pierina in the City Council.”
Shahana is a Bangladeshi-American Muslim feminist and community organizer born and raised in Kensington, Brooklyn. If elected, she will make history as the first Muslim woman and the first South Asian person elected in New York City. She is committed to fighting for housing, health care, and other issues important to her community.
“Shahana Hanif is a fierce advocate that our communities can trust will deliver the resources we so desperately need,” said Jamell Henderson, Board Chair of the NYC Regional Board of Citizen Action of New York. “Shahana always comes as her authentic self: passionate, vulnerable and ready to serve the community that she was born and raised in. We are proud to endorse Shahana as our number one choice for City Council District 39.”
