New York, NY— In a nine-person race for New York City Council District 38, Citizen Action of New York announced its endorsement of Alexa Avilés as its first choice for the seat, and Cesar Zuñiga as its second choice.

With ranked choice voting, Citizen Action believes Alexa and Cesar are best suited to represent the district, as both of their priorities include fighting for education equity, housing and climate action. In addition, Alexa is running to champion police reform by reducing police budgets and reinvesting that money into sorely needed youth, mental health care, and family support services.

“We are proud to endorse Alexa Aviles for City Council District 38,” said Jason Salmon, New York City Regional Director of Citizen Action of New York. “Alexa is a lifelong Brooklynite, and will bring her lived experience, deep commitment, and long track record of fighting for everyday New Yorkers to the City Council. Alexa is a passionate education activist, and we’ve seen firsthand her commitment to bringing equity to our public education system. We look forward to fighting alongside someone who we know will put people before profits.”

The 38th city council district covers Brooklyn’s Sunset Park, Red Hook and Greenwood Heights neighborhoods, and portions of Borough Park, Dyker Heights and Windsor Terrace.

Citizen Action of New York is a grassroots organization with eight regional chapters and over 30,000 members across New York State. We work on issues important to our communities, from limiting the influence of money in politics to fully funding public schools and ending mass incarceration.
