New York, NY—As part of New York City’s ranked choice voting system, Citizen Action of New York announced its endorsement of Johanna Garcia as the top candidate for city council district 10. Assemblymember Carmen De La Rosa has been ranked second, and Angela Fernandez has been ranked as the organization’s third choice for the seat.
Johanna currently serves as chief of staff to New York Senator Robert Jackson. As a daughter of immigrants, she is running to be a strong advocate for the district’s immigrant community, and as a mother, she will fight to make sure it is a safe place for all children. Johanna is running to champion education, housing as a human right, gender justice, climate action, and so much more. She is committed to community-led solutions that will benefit the most vulnerable members of district 10, as well as to address issues of police brutality, expand access to health care, and mental health services.
“Citizen Action has been on the forefront of building grassroots movements to provide a good education for every child, protect tenants’ rights, and provide health care for all. I thank them for their work, am honored to receive their endorsement, and look forward to working together in this campaign by all of us, for all of us, to make our community voices heard to transform our city’s policies and chart a new course forward,” said Johanna Garcia, Democratic candidate for New York City Council District 10.
“This is an extraordinarily difficult time for the average New Yorker. Our schools have been historically underfunded, people can’t pay rent and some have quite frankly, lost everything. Meanwhile, the wealthy are rolling in the dough while families literally starve and fall deeper into poverty, ” said Jamell Henderson, Citizen Action NYC Regional Board Chair. “Johanna knows the struggles that district 10 residents face and has spent years fighting for the community. We know she will bring that same energy to the council.”
Citizen Action of New York is a grassroots organization with eight regional chapters and over 30,000 members across New York State. The organization works on issues important to our communities, including fair elections, equitable school funding, housing for all, environmental justice, and ending mass incarceration.
