Albany, NY – In response to the city of Hudson passing its Good Cause Eviction legislation, Rebecca Garrard, Citizen Action Legislative Director, released the following statement:
“The city of Hudson is now the second municipality in New York to pass Good Cause Eviction legislation. We applaud the Common Council for taking action in favor of tenants instead of the wealthy real estate industry.
“This is a huge win for Hudson Valley tenants and homeowners. It means more people will be able to access affordable and dignified housing, even in the face of gentrification. We are so grateful to be in partnership with the Hudson Catskill Housing Coalition to bring about these vital tenant protections. Good Cause is a transformative housing justice policy that gives tenants the right to a lease renewal, and prohibits property owners from raising rents so high that Black and Brown families are displaced.
“While we continue fighting to protect tenants by calling on our city mayors and council members to pass Good Cause at the local level, we want to ensure everyone in New York is protected from predatory developers by passing this during the upcoming state legislative session. We need Assemblymember Didi Barrett to help make sure New York passes a statewide Good Cause Eviction policy during the next legislative session.”
