Kingston, NY – Citizen Action of New York is celebrating the passage of Good Cause eviction in the City of Newburgh. Good Cause eviction is a progressive housing justice measure that guarantees all tenants the right to a lease renewal and protection from unconscionable rent hikes. Genevieve Rand, Citizen Action Statewide Housing Organizer, released the following statement;
“We are thrilled to see the city of Newburgh pass its own version of the statewide Good Cause eviction bill due to the hard work of coalition partners For the Many and Community Voices Heard. Once again, a locality has taken up this critical bill to protect their constituents after state legislators failed to pass it last year. New Yorkers believe that housing is a human right, and Good Cause brings us closer to that reality. The momentum behind Good Cause eviction shows the power of grassroots organizing. Together, we are telling state legislators that this is a priority for us— we want Good Cause passed during the upcoming legislative session. Citizen Action will continue to work with our community allies and legislative champions to make sure all New Yorkers have access to safe and affordable housing. We also look forward to State Senator James Skoufis, who represents Newburgh, supporting this policy during the next legislative session.”
