In response to the senseless and brutal murder of Tyre Nichols, Jamell Henderson, Regional Council Chair of the NYC Chapter of Citizen Action of New York had this to say:
“The people of the City of New York are beyond disgusted and disappointed at the brutal murder of Tyre Nichols.
This tragedy is a stark reminder of the role that law enforcement has played in our daily lives as Black New Yorkers. Law enforcement loves to claim that they are here to fight crime, yet within their own department, they hire, keep, or transfer officers who have clearly shown racist, unprofessional behavior that exacts their psychological frustration on the Black body.
The horrific murder of Tyre Nichols is a reminder that we cannot give up on the right to live and thrive in our communities. The New York City Chapter of Citizen Action is going to continue to push, to call for legislation from City Hall and Albany resulting in true accountability and transparency from law enforcement.
Though Nichols was murdered in Memphis, it is a reality that Black people face mortal danger from police brutality everywhere, including right here in our home of New York City. We have the same right to live and be safe that everyone does. And we will not stop until that right is guaranteed and true justice is served.”
