February 1, 2023 (Albany, NY)–Citizen Action of New York is committed to achieving a society rooted in dignity, safety and opportunity for all. Following the release of Governor Kathy Hochul’s Executive Budget, Rebecca Garrard, Legislative Director for Citizen Action of New York had the following to say:
“The governor’s budget is full of missed opportunities to make life a little bit more manageable for everyday New Yorkers. She has made it clear that her priority is instead to satisfy the ultra-wealthy and corporations–in other words, her donors. That’s why her solution to the housing crisis is more incentives–read giveaways–to corporate developers with no support for renters who are losing their homes now because of predatory rent hikes. Even when she makes the effort to help families by fully implementing the court-mandated school funding, she also adds more charter schools, siphoning public money into the pockets of private operators and denying New York public school children the full funding and resources they need and deserve.
“We are eager to dive into the details of the Governor’s proposals on health care, climate, child care and the other critical investments New Yorkers need. Unfortunately, we expect she will continue this trend of prioritizing the corporate interests over the public good. Thankfully, the people have elected supermajorities in the legislature that can and must deliver for us. New Yorkers are counting on them.”
